Readers write -- Kalavista boat launch revisited.

Just a short comment/suggestion about the Kalavista Boat Launch. I think the ideal location for a sizable launch and safe moorage would be the "country club" on Westkal Road. Large property, room for tons of parking, and probably 80-100 rental/purchase slips. Imagine the revenue. The "affluent" could join the rest of us at the public beaches and tennis courts and no need to get rid of the nice tennis courts off Kalavista. Pipe dream, I know. I stopped using the Kalavista Launch a while back mainly because of the congestion and the need to go over those nasty humps on Westkal Road. I've witnessed countless near misses there and so many people who do not have sufficient skill to back trailers safely and efficiently into the lake. When you cut to the chase, this is what really causes the problems at Kalavista, not the volume. Not to mention the tiny little docks that don't even accommodate one boat properly let alone two. For most local boating enthusiasts, the best times on Kal Lake are from about August 15th to the end of September anyway, but don't let that little secret get out.

The media and the Coldstreamer has definitely not listened to the suggestions and issues related to the Kalavista Boat launch area. The residents are NOT for the closure of the boat launch they are FOR limited and controlled access. GVS and Coldstream council can not continue to increase boat parking when the boat launch can not adaquately handle the flow. Doesn't anyone understand how a funnel works?? Improperly tied down loads are illegal on any road. So why does GVS or Council insist you leave the boat launch and travel down a public roadway before you tie down your boat? The suggestion of queing your boat has been suggested. Look out your window and tell me honestly you would allow locals and tourists to sit idilling their vehicles and boats in from of your home blocking your driveway during boating season? I think not! Residents must drive down the wrong side of the road to access their homes. Try something...stand outside your home and visualize this happening on your street. The residents are offering reasonable solutions and that does not include closing the boat launch, but limiting and controlling it to a reasonable flow. Please note this was not as major an issue until the corner of Kalavista and Kalamalka has been continually expanded for boat parking. Again, the residents are not for closing the launch, they are for a controlled and limited launch not a dangerous free for all. Before you make an uninformed judgement, find out what the complete and accurate issue is.

Couldn't agree more. I don't think the solution is closure either, however, the country club property would be an excellent choice and I wasn't kidding either. I'm a former Kalavista resident myself and I've used that launch hundreds of times. The problem comes down to inadequate size and lack of skill in backing trailers, plain and simple. There are launches on the coast that employ people to back up trailers and keep the flow going. During busy times, there is no traffic flow at this launch and it is downright dangerous! Address those two issues and your problems would probably disappear and everyone would be happy.
