Mayor hopeful on board -- By Jennifer Smith

One of Coldstream’s very own politicians is looking to move up in the ranks.

Coun. Jim Garlick is seeking the mayor’s seat in the upcoming municipal election, Nov. 15.

Since the current mayor, Gary Corner, has announced that he will be resigning at the end of his term, Garlick is the lone mayoral candidate, so far.

But that situation could change as candidates have until Friday at 4 p.m. to file their nominations.

The 47-year-old Clarence Fulton Secondary teacher is in his first term as councillor.

Although he may be seeking a different position, with higher authority, this time around, Garlick says his focus remains the same.

“I’m running the same as I did before, on the same platform that I did before,” said Garlick, a long-time Coldstream resident, whose grandparents came to the area in 1910.

Some of those issues include managing development better, so that the community benefits and receives some amenity.

“It’s a privilege to develop there,” said Garlick, adding that he would like to see the nature of Coldstream remain intact.

Community involvement is also important to Garlick, particularly with an Official Community Plan review anticipated this term.

Even as a child, Garlick was alert to his community since the family dinner conversations focused on what was happening in Coldstream and because his father was a public works superintendent. Now that he is raising his own family in Coldstream, his interest remains.

Garlick, who now has three years of politics under his belt, serves on the following Coldstream committees: agricultural advisory, public works facility, finance and advisory planning.

“I hope to work with a group of people on council with similar thinking,” said Garlick.

There are currently eight hopefuls seeking six seats as councillors, none of which include the existing councillors, so far. The candidates are: Maria Besso, Perrin Hayes, John Hegler, Becky Strube, Peter Peto, Dean Skoreyko, Richard Enns and Gyula Kiss.

About Me

My photo
I have been a resident of Coldstream since 1976. I have had 15 years of experience on Council, 3 years as Mayor. As a current Councillor I am working to achieve fair water and sewer rates and to ensure that taxpayers get fair treatment. The current direction regarding water supply is unsustainable and I am doing all I can to get the most cost effective water supply possible.
