Readers write - REMINDER – LAST ONE - I PROMISE!!!

Just a reminder that the SPrKL wetland clean-up, next to the RDNO office (map attached), takes place this Friday and Saturday.

If you missed out on the Adopt-a-Stream clean-up and want to be involved in a community event come out and join us for as long as you like. We will be providing healthy snacks to all volunteers including apple juice (home-made), fruit bars and even pizza (at the end of each day).

Friday, weeding starts at 1:00 pm and goes until early evening. Saturday, planting starts at 10:30 am and goes until late afternoon. If possible, bring gloves and clippers for weeding and bring shovels, shears and buckets for planting. Extra supplies will be on-site.

Big thanks go to Paul and Carrie for helping out with this project. Paul generously provided background information, Section 9 Review and met with regulators on-site. Carrie was invaluable in providing directions on plant type, placement and product sourcing.

The event is being filmed as part of a documentary that will eventually be put on the spkl website. For more info on the project go to spkl.ca and check out ‘upcoming projects’.

It would be great to see you there!

SPrKL News -- Thank you all.

Thank you so much everyone for your generous contributions to the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake! We were overwhelmed with the number and quality of items donated, the willingness of members, friends and neighbours to help out with the sale, and the number of people who attended and paid generously to help support SPrKL’s mission. Please fwd SPrKL’s appreciation to others that you spread the word to, whose emails I do not have.

Thank you also, to Edith Thoreson and the Lavington Community Association for putting SPrKL’s Garage Sale on their map, along with Lavington’s, in their 17th Community-Wide Garage Sale Event.

Special thanks go to Doug, Christine and Jim Cookson, not only for providing the Log House venue and hosting the Garage Sale, but also for doing the lion’s share of the setting-up and organizing, as well as providing lunch for the on-site “worker bees”!
The result of this community effort amounted to $1012.25! This money will go toward purchasing riparian plants for SPrKL’s Earth Day Kalavista Lagoon Restoration And Education Project to take place on Thursday, April 21st at the Lagoon and Log House. (More about the project later) We are hoping for some volunteers to help with digging holes, fencing, and clean-up. If you are interested and willing, to take part, please contact:

SPrKL News!

Hello SPrKlers, SPrKL Associates Neighbours, and Friends!

As you may know, in 2010 SPrKL (Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake) received a $16000 Federal Eco-Action Grant which went toward purchase of riparian plants and fencing materials for enhancing the riparian vegetation and protecting the shores along Coldstream Creek at the Dog Park. The purpose of these activities was to help reduce erosion and improve Coldstream Creek water quality. This project was carried out as a contribution to the community’s ongoing Coldstream Creek Restoration Project.

This year SPrKL has applied for a $5000 RBC Blue Water Grant to carry out similar activities on a smaller scale in the area of the Kalavista Lagoon. SPrKL plans to plant riparian vegetation and install protective fencing along the Lagoon shore adjacent to the tennis court area, in order to prevent further erosion of the its banks and to enhance the wetland water quality and habitat. This project would be just a small step in SPrKL’s mission and the Community’s plan to rehabilitate the Kalamalka Lake Watershed and protect our drinking water.

Our general goals over time related to this particular project are:
  • to educate ourselves and others about the rich biodiversity of the Kalavista Lagoon, its contribution to the health of the watershed, and the means to keep it healthy
  • to involve the community in a habitat rehabilitation and educational signage project in the area
  • to encourage the “powers that be”to restore circulation of fresh water to the Lagoon so as to to return it to a healthy state
  • to create an Eco- Park in the Lagoon area
We will not know if we are to be awarded the grant or not, until early to mid April, and SPrKL has learned from experience that there are likely to be cost over-runs on projects such as this. Therefore, in the meantime, we are applying for another grant, and holding a Community Garage Sale on April 16th to raise extra funds.

We hope you will spread the word regarding SPrKL’s goals and activities, as well as contribute items and/or your time and ideas to help with the Garage Sale.

Please see the attached poster for details.

Important meeting! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WETLAND DEVELOPMENT MEETING IS TONIGHT – NOT TOMORROW NIGHT AS PREVIOUSLY STATED.

Hello SPrKLers!

The Alan Brooks Nature Centre will be holding a:

public consultation meeting at

7 pm. tonight, Wednesday February 23rd at

the Vernon Recreation Centre to

discuss their plans to construct a wetland on the vacant property near Walmart.

ABNC has received a Federal EcoAction Grant to undertake this exciting project. As SPrKL is applying for a grant to restore the Kalavista Lagoon, we hope that you and your friends/neighbours/committee members will attend, in order to gather information that can be used to help guide SPrKL’s proposed project. Please forward this email to others who might be interested.

Owing to commitments to several other important community meetings on Thursday evening, many of SPrKL’s executive members won’t be able to attend.

We are hoping that some of you will be able to go and report back.

As I will be out of town for the next 2 weeks, please email info@spkl.ca with any information you have to share.

Thank you in advance,

Louise Christie
