GREEN PARTY CRITIC SAYS PEOPLE NEED BAILING OUT, NOT CORPORATIONS
As more and more Canadians lose their job, Green Party Industry and Business Critic Huguette Allen, says the Harper government should look at implementing a Guaranteed Livable Income to support Canadians while industry and government work at implementing a new sustainable economic model.
"If we can hand out billions to save the hide of the very people who caused the meltdown then we can find the necesssary billions to give every Canadian the security and dignity of a GLI." says John Fryer, Green Party labour critic. "Most other current social programmes would be blended into a GLI approach and this should be taken into account when costing GLI, along with all the economic gains that would come from reducing poverty", added Allen.
The Green Party has developed an Economic Stimulus Plan earlier this year that creates new jobs and stimulates the economy by emphasizing local and regional economies and capitalizing on the opportunity to build long-lasting infrastructure that addresses the climate crisis. The Greens' plan calls for more local processing of Canada's resources, on the quick implementation of renewable energy, on investments in rail, and on tax credits associated with the installation of environmentally friendly renovations such as those related to saving water and energy.
"Government should also recognize that small businesses are at the core of the Canadian industry and provide more sustainable jobs to communities than multinationals do. When a local factory shuts down, government should help people start their own plant by investing in micro loans and micro investments for small businesses" said Allen. "Small plants that offer even only 5 good jobs close to home, contribute significantly to the health of communities" said Allen "and these are the types of bailouts that our government should be looking at."

Economic Stimulus Presents Opportunity for Innovation -- Green Party press release
LUMBY: The Green party believes the economic crisis combined with the Climate Crisis create an opportunity to shift the economy towards a more sustainable path. Huguette Allen, Industry/Small Business Critic on the Green Party Shadow Cabinet contributed to developing the Green Stimulus Plan that shows how government spending should be an investment in the future of Canada.
"Every dollar spent must benefit Canadians today and tomorrow by creating jobs that are sustainable, increasing the health and quality of life for future generations, and help make us more resilient against sudden shocks" says Huguette Allen. "This means eliminating Corporate Welfare by cutting the billions of dollars given in subsidies to the fossil fuel, nuclear and mining sectors, while investing in a low carbon future and repairing our degraded environment so the next generation has access to the resources they will need."
The Green Economic Plan includes increasing support to local economies and agriculture, investing in value-added manufacturing, renewable energies, habitat rehabilitation, Arts and Culture, transport infrastructures - no new roads but repairing existing ones and improving rail - water and waste infrastructures, redressing the inequities faced by First nations people, and training for a new economy. It also includes extending Canada's social safety net to help those most in need and and providing tax relief.
The Green Party ascribes to the guidelines provided by the International Monetary Fund that say spending to kick-start the slowing economy should stay within 2% of GDP. The Green Stimulus Plan is available online at www.greenparty.ca. Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada, unveiled the Green Party's economic stimulus package yesterday at a press conference in Ottawa.

Huguette Allen and the Okanagan-Shuswap: First on the Honour Roll!
Media Release
For Immediate Release
November 21st, 2008
LUMBY – It's official - The Okanagan Shuswap is the 5th greenest riding across Canada and the riding that progressed the most between 2006 and 2008! According to the Green Party of Canada's website, 7,184 more votes were cast for the Green Party of Canada in 2008 than in 2006. This is the largest gain for the Green Party throughout Canada.
Only one other candidate achieved a comparable gain, the average gain between 2006 and 2008 being 2,600 votes. The second highest on the Honour Roll is Mike Nagy in Guelph Ontario who grew his vote support by 7,078. However as Allen points out: "Mike ran an 11 week campaign, being in one of the ridings that was already in by-elections when the elections were called. It's hard to tell how much this played into the results for they also had a great team and a fantastic campaign strategy."
Getting 17.3% of the votes also means that for the first time in this riding, the Green Party will be starting out with money in the bank next time around. Like all parties that get at least 10% of the votes, they will be receiving back 60% of their election expenses. Over forty green party candidates got at least 10% of the votes in 2008 compared to only 8 in 2006, including the nearby ridings of Kelowna-Lake country, Okanagan-Coquihala and Kootenay-Columbia.

Green Party urges government review and changes for Canadian Food System
For Immediate Release
August 27, 2008
MARGAREE – The Green Party is sounding alarm bells over the recent outbreak of Listeriosis, saying the recent deaths due to the Listeria bacteria should be a sufficient warming for Health Minister Tony Clement and Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz to review the Canadian food safety regulations.
“In 1996, the Liberal government moved food safety out of Health Canada’s mandate,” said Green Party leader Elizabeth May. “Food safety was handed over to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) while the Agency was also made responsible for promoting Agri-Foods. The end result is that safety regulations are now designed for a global food system, not a more sustainable local food system. The global food system is rife with dangers due the long distances food travels, the impossibility of controlling food regulations and practices around the world and the long shelf life that is expected of food these days."
Green Party Industry and Business critic Huguette Allen, candidate in Okanagan—Shuswap, has actively campaigned against new meat inspection regulations in British Columbia that harm smaller and family farms.
"Many regions of Canada have excellent local food economies but are hindered because small family farms are expected to adhere to the same safety standards as food that is transported all over the globe. Yet we know from common sense as well as experience, that no matter what standards we impose of global foods, safety issues persist. When outbreaks occur, repercussions are inevitable."
Ms. Allen pointed out that the Harper government says Canadian food distribution system is not 100 percent safe and that "food poisoning and bacteria outbreaks will occur from time to time”, yet the government makes it illegal for Canadian family farms in most provinces to sell poultry and meat raised and processed on the farm.
Consistent with its privatization agenda, the Harper government has announced that as of October 2008, it will no longer inspect federally inspected slaughterhouses (sic) but will require these companies report on themselves.
“The Green Party opposes this move and urges the government to review the Canadian food system and safety regulations in their entirety and to put food safety back into the hands of Health Canada,” said Ms. Allen. “The CFIA should be given the responsibility for local food economies rather than Agri-food/global food economies.”

Readers write -- Huguette Allen
Good day,
As I read our MPs column in your paper I was disconcerted at it's content. Our elected MP gets the privilege of using your media without having to pay from his own pocket for the good reason that we need our representative to keep us informed of the issues he is working on on our behalf and of the progress he is making. As well, we need him to keep us informed regarding government policies and changes that may affect us.
Instead of doing this, Mr. Mayes is using our dollars and time to rant against other parties and to ridicule other politicians. We deserve better. We deserve to be told what our representative is doing to represent his constituents who believe something needs to be done to address the urgent threat of climate change. If Mr. Mayes is not doing anything, then we need to be told what will happen to us, how our forests, rivers and grasslands will fare in 10 years because of this inaction. We deserve to be told why the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) is still in charge of promoting agri biz while being responsible for food safety, when the results of this conflict of interest is killing the family farm and forcing us to eat imported unsafe food. We need to know why the federal government is letting P3 (Private Public Partnership in building hospitals) happen throughout the country instead of making it mandatory for provinces to fully protect our national healthcare system. And we all need to know a lot more about what our representative has done to represent all the constituents who have written him to oppose Bill C-51 and 52.
Mr. Mayes needs to be told that his constituents are intelligent thinking people who expect their representative to inform them clearly and honestly about issues that affect us all.
Huguette Allen,
Green Party MP Candidate, Okanagan Shuswap Riding.
