This is an interesting story. 

Toby Pike is the manager of SEKID. I believe that referendum should have been approved by the people. Their annual costs would have been lower and they would have enjoyed the benefit of clean water much sooner. 

SEKID has the same problem we do: small volume of domestic water is delivered to customers through agricultural irrigation pipes. Toby put his finger on the problem  "it doesn't make sense to treat all of that water". They will do total separation with domestic customers receiving well water and untreated raw water will be used for irrigation through the existing system. 

How come this simple (but expensive) solution did not gain support in our neck of the woods? If we must spend money spend it on the right projects. Instead we wasted a lot of taxpayers' dollars.

Endearing encounter between Vernon teen and buck - Global News

VERNON — An encounter a Vernon teenager will never forget.

Miles, 17, and his mother Maegan were sitting on a small stretch of beach along Kalamalka Lake Wednesday night when they spotted a curious buck about 15 feet away.

The white tailed deer headed straight for them, instantly growing a liking to Miles.

The deer rubbed his head playfully against Miles’ head. Mother Maegan quickly grabbed her smart phone and recorded the entire thing.

“[Miles] was in shock” says Maegan, “he’s a pretty down to earth kid, he really enjoyed the experience.”

But the buck didn’t stop there.

“He didn’t want to leave us” continued Maegan, “when we went to leave he followed us to our truck.”

Maegan says the deer didn’t act aggressively at any point during the encounter.

In fact as they were leaving, the deer, still craving attention, approached another vehicle and stuck his head right inside the passenger window.

Maegan says she’s happy her and her son had this amazing experience, describing it as something “you’ll never see again in your lifetime.”

Coincidentally, I came across the same buck two nights ago while walking my dog on Cunliffe Drive. He approached us and appeared very friendly but I was not too sure about his intentions so we avoided him. He then approached other walkers and was very friendly with all, including dogs. I was told that he is a regular visitor in the area and is extremely friendly.

I hope everyone will treat this friendly buck with great respect.

Scientists march to Parliament Hill to protest 'death of evidence'

 

OTTAWA – Hundreds of scientists stepped away from their petri dishes on Tuesday to denounce what they say are the Harper government's sweeping cuts to research.

Flanked by supporters, the white-coated scientists marched through downtown Ottawa to Parliament Hill for a mock funeral marking "the death of evidence."

They carried placards that read "No Science, No Evidence, No Truth," and "Save ELA," referring to the experimental lakes area that recently had its funding cut.

A central theme of the rally was the planned closure of the ELA, a research station in Ontario that produces critical data used to combat acid rain and phosphate pollution in lake water. Without government funding, it is slated to close in 2013.

"The experimental lakes area is a world-class, living, outdoor laboratory where scientists have studied how to protect freshwater for decades," said Maude Barlow, head of the Council of Canadians and a former senior adviser on water to the UN General Assembly.

"The Harper government is shaming Canadians in the eyes of the world and killing a major gift to water science at the very moment we are really beginning to understand the depth of the global water crisis."
