Council will wait until the New Year to take a stance on a major recreational facility being proposed for Wood Lake. Ponderosa Enterprises is applying to the Integrated Land Management Bureau (ILMB) to lease an area on the west shore of Wood Lake on which a 200 slip marina would be built.
The ILMB will send out a referral reviewing the details of the application in January. While several concerns have already been voiced by council it was agreed at last week’s council meeting that the best course of action would be to wait until all of the information came in before forming opinions.
Mayor James Baker said that the application could signal the beginning of “piecemeal planning” for the Wood Lake corridor. The corridor will bring a variety of recreational opportunities to the community after the highway re-alignment has been completed and, Baker says he would rather see an integrated development plan for the entire west shore.
Coun. Alice Rees questioned the impact that such a large facility would have on the lake. “The request to move the highway was based on its impact on Wood Lake. A 200 slip marina will have a bigger impact than passing traffic,” said Rees.
The area identified for the proposed lease is on the west shore of Wood Lake where Ponderosa Drive intersects Highway 97. Parking for the marina would be located across the highway from the facility and users would cross the road by way of a raised pedestrian bridge.
