Coldstream Ratepayers Association Meeting - January 9, 2014

There was a good turn out for the Ratepayers Association Meeting in the Coldstream Women's Institute Hall tonight.

Several speakers opposed any move to join a study for possible amalgamation of Coldstream, Vernon and the Electoral Areas B and C. None of the speakers envisioned any savings from amalgamation. Several examples were produced showing the major pitfalls of amalgamation: loss of identity, loss of contact with elected representatives, higher taxes, potential poorer service levels, inheritance of Vernon's infrastructure deficit etc.

At the end of the meeting a show of hands encouraged Council not to participate in a Provincial Government funded study.

Good news!

Participation in a study gives credence to a dubious agenda that was driven by a very questionable petition process.

Add to that, the tax dollars spent on yet another study.

As a former resident of The Landimg who did not vote for amalgamation I would lke to add that the bottom line to amalgamation is that it is nothing but a tax grab by the city for more dollars to squander. All other arguements are whitewash as laid out very well in Mr. Weatherill's letter.

Perhaps the Vernon governance group ought to have a petition asking their city to make Vernon a pot hole free-zone.

Almost lost my little car down one of those craters.

Out of curiosity, if there is no support for almalgamation in the Coldstream area, why the calling together of the troops, after being "dormant" for three years? Whats there to be worried about?

Not a very astute comment. Several of the organizers of the governance review businessmen live in Coldstream. It's always nice to see that the grassroots remain faithful! I would be ashamed to sign a petition dealing with amalgamation having been elected to Council jobs in the past. Others seem to change their allegiance at will. There is no worry!

@4:02

We, who love Coldstream must be vigilant: those who wish to profit from amalgamation have a vested interest in persisting.

It's nice that the ratepayers get a private audience with council.

I have been a resident of Coldstream since 1976. I have had 15 years of experience on Council, 3 years as Mayor. As a current Councillor I am working to achieve fair water and sewer rates and to ensure that taxpayers get fair treatment. The current direction regarding water supply is unsustainable and I am doing all I can to get the most cost effective water supply possible.
