Coldstream Council has taken a stand on amalgamation study.

Coldstream Council chambers were filled with residents to hear the presentation by Mr Peter Moore and Mr Bruce Shepard of the Greater Vernon Governance Association. They promoted a study to investigate the pros and cons of "unification" of Vernon, Coldstream and Electoral Areas B and C.

Council members have taken turns in questioning the presenters about their reasons for promoting such study again. In 2008 the same group was promoting another potential governance model which eventually died on its own.

Both Directors of the above Electoral Areas attended the meeting and spoke against such study.

Several residents elected to speak on the issue and except for two of them they all spoke against such study. Many of them passionately defended Coldstream residents right for self governance.

Following the presentations Council debated the issue and unanimously supported a motion of non-participation in the proposed study.

Based on the stance the Directors of Electoral Areas B and C have taken it is unlikely that the study will proceed pending the results of the next Municipal election.

I hope this will be the end of it. Unless someone comes up with it again in 5 years. We don't want Amalgamation as simple as that!!

At least they admit there are cons.

I don't want a nickel of my tax dollars spent on a no-brainer question.

What part of Bob Weatherill's comprehensive letter do they not get?

One of the key factors that helps shape our community identity is our wonderful volunteer fire department who bring our community together at Halloween and Christmas, and keep us safe year-round.

Now there's another reason we are so fortunate to have them:

Too funny - this afternoon City of Vernon filled the vehicle destroying craters on Kal Lake Rd. Was there a mole at the meeting? :-)

IMO the presenters were skewing their true goals under questioning which they poorly replied to. I feel there is big $$$ at stake here for some peoples pockets. Certainly not altruistic by any stretch of the imagination!

We are a fine old Municipality doing very well not an unincorporated struggling area. Those who are upset with it out here are free to move to Vernon whenever they wish - please! Pity they don't realise how good they have it here.

Can anyone say why Councillor Cochrane is keeping such a low profile? Playing both sides of the fence perhaps whilst collecting a nice salary from Coldstream? Always wondered at his motives for switching to Coldstream council from Vernon. Be nice if he spoke up.

Councillor Cochrane was the one who made the motion not to support a study for amalgamation. He has been very supportive of Coldstream issues and he is an excellent Councillor. All of Council was unanimous in protecting our lifestyle and governance model. Be nice!

About Me

My photo
I have been a resident of Coldstream since 1976. I have had 15 years of experience on Council, 3 years as Mayor. As a current Councillor I am working to achieve fair water and sewer rates and to ensure that taxpayers get fair treatment. The current direction regarding water supply is unsustainable and I am doing all I can to get the most cost effective water supply possible.
