launching by 9:30 am. from Kal Beach and other accesses

Important Note: The RCMP will be on the lake so to avoid a big fine please wear a life jacket!

BE SURE TO READ THE IMPORTANT INFO BELOW!

Dear Registrants,
Splash Mob is this Sunday!
Thank you for registering. At this point, it looks like we'll have at least 100 boats in the water, and more are registering every day.
Here are several important details for everyone to know:
1) We'll be mustering at Kal Beach and launching @ 9:30. There is plenty of parking directly behind Kal Beach, along Kal Lake Road east of Alexander's Beach Pub,  and also parking along Westkal Road west of the beach.
2) Remember to WEAR YOUR PFD's. You are required by law to be wearing one if you're out on the lake. The RCMP boat will be on Kal Lake on Sunday. They are aware of our event and don't want to be bad guys, but let's not put them in the position where they have to be. If you're planning on bringing a floaty or air mattress and you don't own a PFD, you'll join the circle at the portion closest to the beach. The RCMP have told us that if you're close to the beach without a PFD, you won't be breaking the law.
3) Our circle flotilla will be formed by 10:00 a.m.. The centre of the circle will be a few hundred feet off of Kal Beach. In the centre will be a large floating sign that spells out the words "STOP INVASIVE MUSSELS."
4) Air mattresses and floaties will form the North side of the circle, closest to the beach. Kayaks, canoes, and SUP's will form the East and West sides of the circle. Boats with any kind of motor will form the South side of the circle, farthest from the beach.
5) We have a team of 3 professional cinematographers from Rubicon Cinema joining us. They will be filming the whole event with their big, badass drone.
6) We'll stay in the circle formation for about 20 minutes, long enough for our cinematographers to capture the event adequately.
7) I will be on a megaphone for the entire event, to make sure everything flows and comes together!
We're super excited for this Sunday. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us back. See you on the water!

Sincerely,
Brynne Morrice

SPKL'ers Information

Hi SPKL'ers,

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1169368454/splash-mob-2016?ref=nav_searchSplash Mob is coming together fast and furious. My head is going in so many directions I'm almost exploding! But I'm super excited....

I also really need all your help.

Two days ago we launched a fundraiser. It's only $1,200 we're trying to raise, but we really need this money! Please help me by sending this to EVERYONE you know, and expressing the importance of it.  Click on the photo to see the video!

Now, a reminder that this Saturday we're having our first work party! I'll have a big stack of leaflets, and we'll head out door-to-door and chat to people
.
Also, a few thoughts on getting people to come to Splash Mob:

1) First off, I challenge each SPKL'er to personally bring FIVE PEOPLE to Splash Mob!

2) I have found that direct emails work much better than Facebook posts. Although it's best to do both

3) Talk to everyone you come across! If you're not able to attend for all of Saturday, perhaps you can swing by and grab some leaflets to hand out to people over the course of the week.

More to come soon. Our poster will be ready by tomorrow, and next we're working on getting in all the newspapers and on the radio.

Thanks everybody!

Brynne

Readers Write - Hello SPrKLers and Wantabees!

Now that summer is finally here, we are planning a clean-up of SPrKL’s ColdstreamCreek Restoration Planting Project
at the Dog Park on Kal Lake Road
...aka, Creekside Park
6 pm “ish” Wed. July 13th.

We need to clear out any plants that didn’t survive, get rid of noxious weeds, and generally tidy and clean up the site.

If you can come and give an hour or so of your time to help out, please show up with work gloves, hat, “sensible shoes” and water – it’s pretty hot and thirsty out these evenings!

Bring your kids/parents/friends, dogs... and...
If you have a shovel, rake, hoe, pruners, etc., please bring them along in case we have a lot of energy and a big turn-out!

Then... join us for refreshments afterward at the Log House 8505 Kalavista Drive

Hope to see you there!

Louise

Readers Write - Sparkle -- Invitation!

Hello All,

Dave Facey, new member of the SPrKL (Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake) executive and resident of Kekuli Bay Estates recently brought the matter of a proposed compost facility to be developed above the present landfill (the dump) to SPrKL's attention. Dave and his neighbours have experienced the unpleasant odours coming from the nearby Biosolids Plant, hence they are concerned that the same problem may arise if a compost plant were to be developed above the dump. Further, residents in the west side of Coldstream may well be affected by possible odours carried from the proposed facility by the prevailing winds.

SPrKL is concerned not only about a possible odour problem affecting Coldstream residents, but more so about the possibility of leachate from the proposed composting process finding its way into Kalamalka Lake. Is the top of a hill between two lakes an appropriate place for a composting plant?

I have attached the invitation that was sent to Dave and his neighbours, and I will fwd the information about the proposed composting plant in another email to follow shortly.

Please attend the meeting tomorrow evening, Thursday November 25th from 7 to 9pm at the Regional District (NORD) office on the corner of Aberdeen Rd and Hwy 6 to find out more about the proposal, raise any concerns, and ask questions.

Louise Christie

Readers write - Volunteers needed!.

Greetings from the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake
(SPrKL)!

As part of the North Okanagan Regional District’s Adopt-A-Stream Program, SPrKL has adopted the reach of Coldstream Creek running between Kirkland Drive and McClounie Road.
.
On May 15th this year, we held a well attended and fun ‘Stream Clean up Day’. Since then, SPrKL, with the support of the District of Coldstream, has received a Federal ECO Action Grant to supply and plant vegetation along this reach.

We are asking for your support with further creek clean up and planting on September 18th from 10 am until approximately 1 pm.

We will meet at the Coldstream Municipal Hall at 10 am where a qualified professional will conduct a hands-on planting workshop before we begin the actual planting. Refreshments will be provided.

If you are willing to help out and /or want more information, please contact Trina Koch: tkoch@eba.ca

Message from the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake

*SPrKL*

To all who are concerned about the water quality of Kalamalka Lake:

Monday May 3rd, 2010 from 7:00 -9:00 pm at the Women's Institute Hall, there will be an Open House organized by Coldstream Council and the Environmental Advisory Committee. This meeting is part of Phase 1 of Community Involvement in Creek Action, and will include a brief presentation of the results of the Sensitive Habitat Inventory and Mapping (SHIM) that was done on Coldstream, Brewer, and Craster Creeks last summer. You will have an opportunity to view the maps, to ask questions and to find out what you can do to help protect the Creeks, and ultimately... to help improve the quality of Kalamalka Lake water.

and

Heather Larratt (R.P. Bio)
Larratt Aquatic Consulting (LAC)
aquatic consulting to the Greater Vernon Water Utility.

Speaking on:

The Inner Transport of Kalamalka Lake

Beneath the deceptive calm and stunning beauty of Kalamalka Lake, there is incessant motion: the summer water layers tip and twist in 20 m high waves; the inflow from Coldstream Creek moves like a river within the lake, and there is a continuous rain of algae and marl from the surface water. All thie relentless motion is subtle and silent. Water movement affects every aspect of Kalamalka Lake.

WHEN: Sunday September 27th, 2009 3:30pm - 6:30pm

WHERE: Kalamalka Women's Institute Hall ( Near the Coldstream Municipal Hall) 9909 Kalamalka Lake Rd.

Talks will be followed by a raffle draw for the beautiful Kal Quilt, followed by refreshments and a brief AGM meeting.
