Colin Hansen maintains that "...the government is legally required to return all of the carbon tax through offsetting tax cuts". I do have a couple of questions about this argument.
If they are planning to return the money to the taxpayers why collect it in the first place? How will this exchange help the environment? All it does is create a whole new set of bureaucracy.
It was noted by Don Quixote that there is a federal tax on the carbon tax (tax on tax). Total carbon tax expected to be $1.85 billion the GST on which is $92.5 million. How is the BC government going to refund this huge amount to the taxpayers?
Collecting those taxes and then redistributing them will cost a lot of money as well. Those monies will not be returned to the taxpayers either. Does it make sense to do all these crazy book keeping smoke and mirrors in the name of reducing carbon emission? Besides, this move will not reduce carbon emission by a significant degree.
If the government really want to reduce carbon emission in a realistic fashion they should start taxing high emission luxury items such as pleasure yachts, all terrain vehicles, seados and the like. Those items are not necessary items to our well being yet they consume a tremendous amount of energy in their production as well as in their operation.

Something to think about.
