The analogy drawn between "interest" in the referendum for the Sports Complex and amalgamation is either magical thinking at its most creative, or a cynical manipulation of numbers to drive support for the agenda of special interests.

Re: Where do you live: as if most U.S. Border Guards would know where Vernon is...

We used to say: in the Okanagan, north-east of Vancouver.

Used to be you were lucky if they knew where Kelowna was.

Excellent letter from Tassie et al .If the financial realities (policing and professional firefighters to name 2) aren't enough to kill interest in joining Vernon, how about the loss of rural character and control of Coldstream priorities? No thanks... I like it like it is. Rather than waste money on a referendum, this amalgamation group should run their own slate of candidates in the next election.Wouldn't this measure the wishes of the community?

The pro-neutralize-rural-independence movement is operating in a vacuum.

Amalgamation and its attendant mythologies have been overwhelmingly been rejected by a MAJORITY of North Okanagan residents. They have expressed their view that amalgamation is an inefficient and costly community-soul-destroying experiment. I am fiercely proud, and protective of my rural community, and natural environment.

Rural communities have intangible values such as self-reliance, neighbourliness, and volunteerism to name a few. Think of Rememberance day, or Halloween without the generosity and hospitality of our volunteer fire-fighters...

“Wise men learn by other men's mistakes, fools by the their own” proverb

"Amalgamation"...the costly experiment that failed:

One would think that wasting money on a referendum that only a minority is interested in would be folly to the fiscally "astute" promoters of amalgamation.

One could also imagine that this scheme has been brewing for some time. So, Anonymous, as to your cogent point about candidates putting the question on the line at election time--one also wonders why the promoters didn't put forward candidates in the last election?

About Me

My photo
I have been a resident of Coldstream since 1976. I have had 15 years of experience on Council, 3 years as Mayor. As a current Councillor I am working to achieve fair water and sewer rates and to ensure that taxpayers get fair treatment. The current direction regarding water supply is unsustainable and I am doing all I can to get the most cost effective water supply possible.
