Protecting Kal water

-

Work begins in Kalamalka Lake next week to lessen turbidity and protect the water source from invasive mussels.

Greater Vernon Water has issued a notice to customers on the Mission Hill Water Treatment Plant/Kalamalka Lake water source that it will be shut down on Nov. 16 to accommodate the extension of the water intake.

An additional 75 metres of pipe is expected to be added to the line into the lake, extending the piping to 325 metres.

It is hoped the extension will lessen turbidity when the water is pumped into residences.

As well, some of the $385,000 being spent on the project will be used to add a chlorine line to get ready for quagga and zebra mussels which can clog up pipes. Such a line can significantly reduce the growth of mussels, according to a water official.

The planned project will take approximately two weeks to complete.

For the duration, all Greater Vernon Water customers will be switched to the Duteau Water Treatment Plant.

Customers who are not normally on Duteau water will notice that the water is much softer and has a low alkalinity and pH. Staff are advising people with in-home water treatment systems or aquariums to take note.

Water source switched!

It is unfortunate that 2015 was such an terrible year for the Mission Hill water Treatment Plant. If not one thing another would force it's closure. Eventually, in 2016 we will all see the need of closing this unfortunate plant and switch over permanently to the "perfect" Duteau Creek water system. lol (It's sarcasm!).

GVW Information Bulletin -Mission Hill WTP closed

"The Mission Hill Treatment Plant treats water from Kalamalka Lake with Ultra Violet Disinfection but does not have filtration; therefore the water quality can be vulnerable to changes occurring in and around the lake. The decision to turn off the Kalamalka Lake water source was based on increased turbidity from spring run-off, especially noted in Coldstream Creek and its affect on the intake in Kalamalka Lake. All water in the Greater Vernon service area will be supplied from the Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant (DCWTP) to avoid issuing a Boil Water Notice to customers normally on Kalamalka Lake."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is true that Mission Hill Treatment Plant has no filtration but has ultraviolet disinfection.

The Duteau Creek Treatment Plant has neither filtration nor ultraviolet disinfection. The question is: is the non disinfected DC water any safer than the ultraviolet treated Mission Hill water?

What was the turbidity index at the time Mission Hill was shut down?

Water Sources Switched

Written by Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM  Friday, 08 June 2012 16:46

Greater Vernon Water has switched water sources for some customers. Customers usually served by the Mission Hill Treatment Plant are now being supplied by the Duteau Creek Plant. Water quality manager Renee Clark says it's due to increased turbidity at the Kalamalka Lake intake caused by the heavy rainfall. "Staff will be continually monitoring turbidity at the Kalamalka Lake intake and the Mission Hill Water Treatment Plant will be put back on line when the turbidity returns to acceptable conditions." In the meantime, customers are asked to limit outdoor water use where possible.

Precautionary BOIL WATER NOTICE

The Regional District of North Okanagan – Greater Vernon Water (RDNO – GVW) is constructing major water system modifications starting Sunday, November 15, 2009. This work will continue through the month of November in preparation for connecting the new Duteau Water Treatment Plant. If you are on the Duteau Creek water source you may notice a change in water quality and pressure due to the use of other water sources. RDNO- GVW will be utilizing King Edward Lake, Kalamalka Lake and a well to provide water for our customers. All sources are disinfected before entering the water distribution system.

A Precautionary BOIL WATER NOTICE will be in effect starting Sunday, November 15, 2009 and is expected to continue for the month of November for ALL Duteau Creek water source customers. This is a precautionary Boil Water Notice and the utility is working to minimize risk to water quality.

WHEN is the notice in effect?

The construction will begin Sunday, November 15, 2009 and customers will be informed when the Boil Water Notice is rescinded.

WHAT should these customers do?

Customers are asked to reduce their water use as much as possible. RDNO – GVW recommends that ALL customers on the Duteau Water System drink boiled water or a safe alternative.

Until further notice, water intended for the following uses should be boiled for one minute:
drinking
washing fruits and vegetables
making beverages or ice
brushing teeth
Boiled water should then be refrigerated in a clean, covered container. Customers may also choose to use bottled, distilled water, or water that has been filtered through a well-maintained treatment device. Water Filters should have the designation “Absolute one micron Certified NSF Standard #53”.

If you have any questions, please contact the Regional District of North Okanagan-Greater Vernon Water (RDNO-GVW) at 250-550-3700 or check our website at www.rdno.ca or www.greatervernon.ca for notifications.
