The Coldstream Ratepayers’ Association is giving residents an opportunity to get to know their candidates prior to the election.
There will be an informal gathering at the Women’s Institute Hall Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Candidates will each say a few words about themselves and their
priorities for Coldstream in the upcoming term, followed by a limited
question/answer period.
Afterwards, refreshments will be available and the audience will have a chance to mingle and meet the candidates.
There are seven candidates, each seeking one of the six seats on council.
The candidates are newcomer Shane Hillman, former councillor Glen
Taylor and incumbents Pat Cochrane, Doug Dirk, Richard Enns, Gyula Kiss
and Peter McClean.
Mayor Jim Garlick has been acclaimed.
This is the final forum for Coldstream candidates prior to the Nov. 15 election.

Kudoos to the Coldstream Council and Mayor for a good forum last night. It was said that Coldstream has the 7th lowest taxes of any municipality in the province, that is great!
Last week I attended the forum that the Lumby Chamber of Commerce put on for the RDNO Electoral Area 'D' election. Huguette Allen is challenging Rick Fairbairn ( the acclaimed Director for the last 12 years) and I was surprised that the costs of having a director was not brought up. Someone opposed using tax dollars to allocate $30,000 a year to Arts & Culture, which of course ends up being split among many citizens, but no one brought up the fact that Director Fairbairn actually costs more than that and that his expenses are not scrutinized the way those of a mayor are. For example, in 2012, Rick Fairbairn costs taxpayers 30,136.45 while the mayor of Coldstream costs taxpayers 29,593.56. The picture for 2013 is similar, with Director Fairbairn costing 34,431.82 and Mayor Garlick $32,005.16. It seems strange that there are so few questions asked regarding how much people are receiving for their money."
