Winter Slowdown For Sports Facility

Written by Glen Morrison
Friday, 24 October 2014 06:00

Greater Vernon's new sports facility by Okanagan  College will be doing some curing over the winter but is still set for a late spring opening.

Regional director Bob Fleming says tenders are now being looked over for the buildings.

"Finding ways and presenting ways or potential ways that cost savings could be made to come closer to our target, and so we're about to hear back on  that," he says.

Fleming says they're ready to lay the artificial track but that won't happen until spring as it's felt to be too risky to put it in at this time of year without curing time.

Green Theme For Council Hopefuls

Written by Peter McIntyre

Forum at Schubert Centre for Vernon council candidatesGreen was the theme for the Vernon council candidates at a forum Thursday night.

About 150 people took in the event at the Schubert Centre, put on by the group SENS, Sustainable Environment Network Society.

The 70 million dollar water referendum was one of the questions, and not one of the 18 candidates on hand said they would be voting for it, with concerns around the cost and the need for the projects.

Other topics included allowing new housing types like Earthships, geo-thermal heating in public buildings, ways to reduce traffic, and what to do with the vacant, former Bank of Montreal building downtown.

All five mayoralty candidates were present, and 13 of the 14 for councillor, with Colt Wilson out of town, and not able to make it.

Today is the 58th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution.

Fifty eight years ago Hungarians rose up against the Soviet oppression. For three weeks they fought but the superior power of the Soviet army overpowered the Hungarians. Many of them escaped, including myself. It was a sad but ultimately a good decision. It is probably debatable as I might have created some discomfort for some of my fellow politicians but I leave the judgement on that issue to my electorate.

I am grateful for the welcome Canadians offered to me and have been trying my best to repay the kindness.

Thank you Canada!

In celebrating this anniversary I am enclosing a couple of pictures Debbie has taken an hour ago. Our cinnamon bear has paid us a visit and was kind enough to let his/her picture taken.

Enjoy the photos!

Soldier shot; gunman enters Canadian parliament, many shots fired

By Randall Palmer and David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A gunman shot a soldier at the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa and was then chased by police into the main parliament building, where at least 30 more shots were fired, according to media and eyewitness reports on Wednesday.

Parliament was locked down and Prime Minister Stephen Harper had left the building safely as police converged on the area.

As the situation developed, CBC News said in a tweeted news alert that more shots were fired near parliament and the gunman was still at large.

Police and tactical teams had converged on the area.

The wounded soldier was taken into an ambulance where medical personnel could be seen giving him cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

The shooting comes two days after an Islamic convert ran down two Canadian soldiers with his car, killing one, near Montreal, before being shot and killed by police.

A construction worker on the scene told Reuters he heard a gunshot, and then saw a man dressed in black with a scarf over his face running towards parliament with a gun
.
The man stopped a black car at gunpoint and hijacked it, construction worker Scott Walsh told Reuters. The driver got out safely, then the man drove the car to the Centre Block on Parliament Hill, where construction work is underway.  Read more

Morning Star Newsclips - The Eagle's comments!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note, that by instituting the proposed changes the immediate cost of Option 6 (erroneously indicated as Option 4) would be reduced to $98.1. This Option would guarantee total separation with significant reduction of treatment costs for the long run.

There is obviously potential for alternate options, thus, a review is absolutely necessary. Defeat of the referendum would allow for a sober second thought!

The suspect in last week's shooting incident in Slocan is dead.

RCMP have informed the media that 45-year-old Peter DeGroot was involved in an "interaction" with two members of the RCMP's emergency response team.

Chief Supt. Frank Smart released the following statement early this evening:

“Earlier today, at approximately 1:20 p.m., two members of the Emergency Response Team were in an area of Slocan near a gravel pit conducting a search of a cabin. Upon entering the cabin there was an interaction between the subject of the ongoing search and the two ERT members. We can confirm the suspect is now deceased. No police officers nor members of the public were injured.

“We must respect that the specifics around what happened when the individual was located is now subject of an IIO (Independent Investigations Office) BC independent investigation. This was a serious incident and we are providing ongoing support to the families of the deceased as well as the police officers involved. (more)

About Me

My photo
I have been a resident of Coldstream since 1976. I have had 15 years of experience on Council, 3 years as Mayor. As a current Councillor I am working to achieve fair water and sewer rates and to ensure that taxpayers get fair treatment. The current direction regarding water supply is unsustainable and I am doing all I can to get the most cost effective water supply possible.
