BC Hydro's energy conservation message.

“If every household in BC reduces electricity use by 10 percent, the Province would be able to power an extra 150,000 homes,” said Jeanette Hoft, BC Hydro Community Relations Manager for the Thompson Okanagan Columbia region.

BC Hydro will be carrying this energy conservation message to the 2009 Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) convention “From the Roots Up” being held in Osoyoos from April 29th to May 2nd.

“B.C.'s energy demands are growing by approximately 30 percent over the next 20 years, and we all need to use electricity wisely. Conservation and sustainability must, however, happen from the roots up,” said Hoft. “Exactly how this can be done will be the topic of presentation by Myles Gregory of BC Hydro’s Power Smart at the conference.”

Mayor Wells said that the Town of Osoyoos is very proud to be hosting this year’s conference. “The theme was chosen to highlight our agricultural history, present and future. We all know that conservation starts at ground level. We must realize that we are part of the problem but more importantly that we are key to the solution. We look forward to sustainability and conservation topics being presented by BC Hydro. Everything we save makes cents,” said Wells.

Last year’s convention host, Mayor Wayne Lippert of the City of Vernon, said the 2008 SILGA convention “Preserving the Past – Planning for the Future” helped set the stage for this year’s theme. “Last year we recognized the contribution of citizens, leaders and innovators of the past, while planning for the challenges that communities will face in the future. It laid the foundation of how important the past is and where we are going with respect to how we live our lives, manage our cities to ensure that there’s some good earth left for our children and grandchildren.”

“Through our sponsorship and involvement in the SILGA convention, BC Hydro is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the communities we serve. We look forward to the opportunity to raise the conservation ethic “from the roots up” within our communities” says Jeanette.

About Me

My photo
I have been a resident of Coldstream since 1976. I have had 15 years of experience on Council, 3 years as Mayor. As a current Councillor I am working to achieve fair water and sewer rates and to ensure that taxpayers get fair treatment. The current direction regarding water supply is unsustainable and I am doing all I can to get the most cost effective water supply possible.
