Be Prepared For Floods - borrowed from Don Qixote

  With the current snow melt and rain in the forecast,  North Okanagan residents are reminded that they are responsible for all measures required for flood protection of private property. To assist property owners who may experience flooding,  communities of the North Okanagan in conjunction with North Okanagan Emergency Management have implemented a comprehensive Sand Bag program. The locations for sand and sand bags are as follows, residents are reminded to bring their own shovels:
Armstrong - for sand and sand bags call 250.546.3023 (same number for after hours)
Coldstream - sand and sand bags located at 2 locations:

• Kalamalka Lake Rd, across from Postill Drive

• Lavington Area - School Road across from Jeffers Park
• For emergencies call Public Works at 250.550.1505 during work hours or 250.545.5304 after hours

Enderby - sand and sand bags located at Public Works yards 2309 McGowan St.  For after hours call
                   250.838.7230.
Lumby - sand and sand bags located in gravel parking lot across from Lumby Arena/Curling Rink parking lot located at 2230 Shields Ave.  For after hours please call 250.547.2160.
RDNO - Sand Bags only located outside gates at the Fire Training Centre - 300 Pottery Rd.  Call 250.550.3731 during work hours.

1862 - The Official Account of Gold Discovery in Cherry Creek

In July 1986, a previously unknown linen tracing of a map was found in the Surveyors General’s office in Victoria. The linen map had been lost for nearly a century and the discovery moved researcher Robert L. de Pfyffer to compile the intricate information found on the map and then place it into context using other available historical information including land records and government reports.

His work was titled, Trails: Found - Cox’s Map of 1862. The story is driven by the discovery that Governor Douglas ordered W.G. Cox to mark a Government Reserve that was ten miles square or 100 square miles in order to claim land for the beginning of a road east to the Columbia River. Cox placed the claim post in what is now Coldstream.

This story provides great details about the Cox expedition into the Monashee in 1862. It also describes in detail who discovered gold in Cherry Creek, and how the gold rush started.

Follow the Cox journey through what is now Lumby to the Shuswap and all the way to Railroad Creek.

Elections Canada swamped with 2011 complaints

OTTAWA (Reuters) - An investigation of alleged dirty tricks during last year's election campaign has been broadened after the number of complaints has snowballed into the tens of thousands, the federal agency that runs elections said on Friday.

The complaints to the agency, Elections Canada, concern fraudulent phone calls made during the campaign for the May 2011 federal election, which was won by the Conservatives. Opposition politicians allege the calls directed their supporters away from correct polling stations in an effort to suppress their votes.

The opposition Liberals have also complained of rude calls made under their name in an apparent attempt to alienate voters. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has categorically denied any Conservative involvement in the calls.

Elections Canada said the high volume of complaints regarding "robocalls", automated calls made with a recorded message, in recent days was the result of political parties and members of Parliament having called on the public to send information to the agency.

"More than 31,000 contacts have been initiated with Elections Canada by Canadians. Elections Canada is reviewing these and will take action as appropriate," the agency said in a statement on Friday.

It emerged on February 23 that Elections Canada had opened an investigation into possible electoral fraud in Guelph, Ontario, but the agency had not confirmed the breadth of its investigations elsewhere, or even if it was investigating.

Friday's statement said the Commissioner of Canada Elections was looking at new complaints and had the authority to bring in investigators from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other agencies to help in times of high volume.

The Guelph investigation has centered on calls made through an automated call center used by the Conservatives, though Elections Canada documents said the call center itself was not under suspicion of doing anything wrong.

Opposition parties have accused the Conservatives of being behind the election phone calls. Liberal leader Bob Rae told a news conference on Friday that in past elections only a few hundred complaints have been registered.

One might ask the question: if there were improprieties during the election should it not be important to investigate and punish those who committed the improprieties? If, as the Prime Minister suggests, the culprits were from the opposition parties identifying those responsible would serve the governing party's interest to shed light on the problem. Just my opinion!
