Lion's Mane Jellyfish Washes Ashore In Puget Sound, Boy Thinks It's An Alien

It's official, jellyfish are both awesome and terrifying.

In June, jellyfish shut down a nuclear power plant in Scotland when they invaded a cooling water pool.

Now, they're claiming the beaches.

"Wake Up With Al" reports that on Friday, a gigantic jellyfish, probably a lion's mane, washed onto the shores of Puget Sound in the state of Washington, much to the shock of a little boy and his father.

Lion's mane jellyfish have impressive dimensions. The largest documented lion's mane jellyfish was seven feet, six inches in diameter, and had tentacles 120 feet long. According to The Week, it is the largest jellyfish in the world and has hundreds of poisonous tentacles that it uses to drag in and eat its prey.

"We were just stunned when we saw it at first," Sherman Pike said, according to CNN. His son, Oliver, apparently was convinced they had found an alien.

Well, it certainly looks like one to us.

Now that we've freaked you out about a jellyfish-ocolpyse, keep in mind that to cure a jellyfish sting, a new study suggests there's no need for urine, just a little vinegar will do the trick.

Although you may need a lot of vinegar for a jellyfish of this size.

National Geographic Recreates How The Earth Was Made (VIDEO)

Every once in a while there's something so cool that you forget about work, errands, or whatever else you have to do for a few minutes to watch it.

This clip from the National Geographic special "Earth: Making Of A Planet" is, for lack of a better description, one of those things.

Although the video was released in March, it seems the internet had somewhat of a delayed reaction to its awesomeness. Better late than never! So, take a moment to watch a clip of how the very planet you're living on came into existence, and view a time when, according to the video, "Earth looked more like hell than home."

According to National Geographic's video website: "Through CGI re-creations, meet the inhabitants of Earth over the ages, from slimy mats of algae to the great dinosaurs and the ancestors of mammals and humans."

Awesome.

Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie Expecting THIRD Child

Thomas Beatie, known to the world as the pregnant man, is expecting his third child, according to MomLogic.com.

Beatie, a transgender male, made international headlines when he wrote an article for The Advocate in March 2008, announcing that he was pregnant and legally male. Thomas, formerly known as Tracy, a beauty queen from Hawaii, had kept his female reproductive organs in hopes that he would someday have children. His sexual reassignment surgery was in 2002.

"Hiding a pregnant man is like hiding an 800-pound gorilla," he wrote in The Advocate. "Nancy and I wanted to tell our story from our own mouths before it got out."

A beaming Thomas and his wife Nancy appeared on Oprah in April 2008, where he stated that he and his wife are able to have intercourse. Although he had not had phalloplasty (the creation of an artificial penis), his testosterone treatments had grown his clitoris into a small penis.

The couple used a sperm donor to conceive. Their first child, a girl named Susan, was born by natural childbirth on June 28, 2008.

After baby Susan's birth, Thomas told People "She's so precious, I just can't stop staring at her...Just holding her is the best feeling in the world." He also bragged that he didn't have a single stretch mark.

The pregnancy didn't prevent Thomas from being a model husband. TMZ photographed him whacking weeds in his Oregon lawn weeks before giving birth.

In November 2008, Thomas, , who is now 35 or 36, told Barbara Walters that he and Nancy were expecting their second child. The couple had their second child, a boy, by natural childbirth on June 9, 2009. Nancy breastfed both children.

Thomas and Nancy began dating when Thomas was 24.

MomLogic.com has photos of the happy family.

Last month a California man named Scott Moore announced he was expecting a baby in February

Palin To Speak At Fundraiser For Canadian Hospital

The Huffington Post

12-11-09 11:53 AM

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has made no secret of her opinion on Canadian public health care. But she's scheduled to speak at a fundraiser for a hospital and cancer center in Canada.

ThinkProgress points out that St. Peter's Hospital is public, performs abortions, and offers end-of-life decision support.

Organizers hope to sell 1,000 tickets at $200 a plate, but raise more via photos with Palin.

When approached recently by a Canadian comedian pretending to be a conservative, Palin gave her opinion on Canadian health care:

"Keep the faith" Palin said, "because common sense conservatism can be plugged in there in Canada too. In fact, Canada needs to reform its health care system and let the private sector take over some of what the government has absorbed."
