Morning Star Newsclips, February 9 - in case you have missed them.
Guenter A. Rieger · Research Eng., Keynote Speaker.... at Self-Employed To all those who oppose everything including amalgamation etc. , please keep the following in mind. To be able an make an informed and educated decision about any issue, you should be able to compare numbers and others factors important to a community, which a study would answer. The Provincial Government pays for such a studies. However, just keep your heads in the sand and don’t allow yourself an open mind. Municipal government is very complex. Therefore elections should not be concentrate on one single issue, like amalgamation. ----------------------------------
A. First of all, it is condescending, and the lowest form of debate to accuse people who do not share your view of being against "everything". Really? Are you serious? My world is generally about "yes".
B. The Pro-Amalgamation Petition was not scrupulously vetted, the smell emanating from that "document" lost me then and there. I imagine that many low-info voters signed this petition before there was a vigorous debate in the media which revealed the flaws in the pro-amalgamation argument. Was there an opportunity for those who regretted signing the petition to withdraw their names?
B. There are numerous scholarly studies, thesis papers, personal accounts, newspaper items etc that demonstrate how that fabulous unicorn: amalgamation, disappoints again and again. Bottom-line: taxpayers pay more to get less.
B. "The Provincial Government pays for such a studies [sic]", yes, and Santa delivers toys on Christmas Eve, but parents know who really pays for them. There is only one collective taxpayer, It is disingenuous to claim otherwise.
C. "Municipal government is very complex. Therefore elections should not be concentrate on one single issue, like amalgamation". Again, more condescension. We can walk and chew gum. Thank you.
Touche Gyula!
ReplyDeletePeople generally don't run on an unpopular agenda, much easier to push an agenda through back-door machinations.
ReplyDeleteEven better, to push while the attention of voters is turned towards such mundane activities such as working to pay ballooning taxes.
